Every time I finish a class session I feel a great sense of accomplishment and have an inner gratitude for my profession. Teaching a class, whether face to face or online, is my life’s purpose. I fully believe that being an effective teacher is a career-long, ever-changing process based on the fact that in my area there is always constant change. Teaching material changes, technology changes, students change, and I change. My goal each semester is to keep the tried and true methods/processes that work and to also incorporate new methods/processes, as well.
Overall, my teaching philosophy and instruction style includes maintaining a positive attitude in and out of the classroom, reflecting my energy towards student’s needs in and out of the classroom, and utilizing my own leadership skills within and out of the classroom to guide and maintain an orderly learning environment.
I have been teaching for 23 years and my instructional method has grown and changed over the years. My instructional method to date has developed into a learner-focused culture type. Meaning, I gain respect from students through my high energy level, outgoing personality, non-authoritative mannerism, and a highly organized process for teaching. My instructional method also includes an open knowledge system. Meaning, nothing is hidden from students. All my students know exactly what is happening in every single class session. All homework, labs, papers, deadlines are clearly posted in three locations: my syllabi, in the LMS for each assignment item, and on the LMS calendar. In addition, students know exactly where they stand at all times in my classes as related to their grades, because I make use of the LMS grade book system and grading comments section. Students never have to ask me to ask for a missing paper, handout, or lecture because all class materials are posted. In all of my courses, I have clear syllabus policies in place related to objectives, deadlines, late points, attendance, courtesy, and student contribution and communication. Finally, in each class I make use of a variety of instructional methods depending on the task/lab/assignment at hand. Examples of these areas may include: lecture based, facilitated based, repetitive based, simulated/problem based, and/or externally based projects via multiple modality instructional methods.
Externally and Project Based Teaching Example. Students work with outside professional sponsors on real projects to solve a business need. Projects include all stages of project management, research, group work, team dynamics, project writing and much more. Click here to check out these latest projects.
